Was I rude to this stranger?

I was at Starbucks and was waiting for a friend when this stranger approached me and was trying to make a conversation with me. At first he commented on the weather and I smiled and nodded at him. He asked me if it's alright with me if he sits on one of the chairs at my table and I said yes. He was friendly but he kept on trying to engage me in a conversation. I was feeling a bit uncomfortable because I don't talk to strangers except when they're introduced to me by friends, but I'm not rude to strangers when they try to talk to me. When I finally felt too uncomfortable in that situation, I excused myself and told him I need to go and nice chatting. He then asked me what my name is and said it was nice chatting with me; that he wants to be my friend and maybe we can get to know each other. I smiled at him and declined to give him my name, but he was so insistent. I was then forced to tell him that he's actually starting to scare me so I need to go. With that, he looked taken aback. I smiled politely, apologized and then walked away. Was I rude? Did I offend him?
