Linux ubuntu flash player plugin?

i have ubuntu, i think lucid. i am very new to this os, and i am having difficulty installing the flash player plugin to view videos on youtube. I have tired installing the .rms, tar.gz, YUM, 32 bit, and 64 bit versions but each keeps giving me an error message i do not understand. anyone else have this problem or now how to resolve it?
