How to determinate who is using Excel file in shared folder?

Hello, in workplace we have a shared folder in which .doc and .xls files are held. Sometimes we need to update these files but if someone in the LAN is opened and using that file - I only can view it as READ ONLY. There are a lot of people on network and I need to know a way how to determine who particularly are using that file.
