Do all pilonidal cysts have to heal as open wounds?

I may have a pilonidal cyst on the cleft of my ox and I've been doing research online and it looks like there are a couple different methods of wound healing. One is open wound where I would have to change dressings and wound packing materials daily and the other where the wound is closed. I consult with my doctor on Wednesday but does anyone know if open wound is always necessary?
