Can a print of a painting be signed by the artist - is it common?

I have a Qi Baishi print of a peony and I can see the dot pattern in the picture but the signature, chinese calligraphy, does not show the dot pattern but looks like ink - even has brush hairs left in the ink.I am asking if it is possible the artist signed the print? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
